About Us - Office of Multicultural Interests
On 27 February 2009 Local Government; Heritage; Citizenship and Multiculturalism Minister, John Castrilli, announced that the Office of Multicultural Interests would become part of the Department of Local Government and Regional Development. This was formalised on 1 March 2009.

The Office of Multicultural Interests is leading the public sector in realising the ideals of multiculturalism.
Western Australia is the most culturally diverse State in Australia. People from more than 200 different countries live, work and study in WA, speaking as many as 270 languages and identifying with more than 100 religious faiths.
The Office of Multicultural Interests’ vision is an inclusive Western Australia where all individuals and groups participate equitably in a spirit of mutual respect.
Office of Multicultural Interests is committed to:
- Achieving equality for people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) backgrounds.
- Working with Commonwealth, State and Local Government to improve services to Western Australians from CaLD backgrounds.
- Engaging the community through community education and funding opportunities to build community capacity.
- Implementing the WA Citizenship Strategy which promotes active citizenship and full and equal participation of all Western Australians in all aspects of society.
- Co-ordinating State Government policies and programs that promote multiculturalism. Such programs include:
- Community Grants Program
- Ethnic Youth Advisory Group
- Harmony Week
- Language Services
- Integrated Service Centres (Parkwood and Koondoola)
