Codes of Practice
The Western Australian animal welfare codes of practice are based on national codes. All of these codes have been endorsed and are supported by the relevant livestock industries in Western Australia. The codes are intended to provide guidance on animal husbandry practices to anyone working with animals. The livestock codes were not intended for audit or compliance purposes and are not written in a legalistic manner. However, the scientific use code must be followed by all people involved in using animals for scientific purposes. A copy of this particular code can be found by following the link detailed in the section Using Animals for Scientific purposes.
Where it is alleged that an act of cruelty has occurred, the Animal Welfare Act 2002 provides a defence for anyone who is following a recognised code of practice. As such, section 25 of the Act provides a defence if a person can prove that they were acting in accordance with a "relevant code of practice". The relevant codes of practice are cited in Schedule 1 of the Regulations and are listed below:
Please note that the livestock codes of practice for Pig Transportation, Cattle Transportation, Sheep Transportation, Sheep, Pigs and Buffalo have been recently re-formatted into fewer pages, but contain the same essential information as the previous versions.
