"The lecturers at university were quick to point out the benefits of working in local government.
They gave statistics involving how many town planners ended up in local government, which involved some 60% to 70%, so it was quite obvious it was a really good area for a town planner to start a career.
Once I had the statistics I kept an eye on the newspaper on the local government jobs for planners. Albany came up as one the first jobs that I saw and here I am!"

Cody - City of Melville
"Hi, I am Cody Smith.
I am 15 and I work as a Sign Manufacturer for the City of Melville.
I became involved in local government because my parents encouraged me to respond to an advert in the local paper.
My job involves bending, welding, cutting and manufacturing the main road and street signs. I also help the manager who is the key sign manufacturer for the city.
The best thing about working for local government is that I am able to complete a traineeship and work in an environment with friendly and supportive people.
My goal in five years time would be to build up my resume, be a manager and run the shop. I encourage young people who are leaving school to get involved in local government because it covers so many areas.
Work hard at school so when the opportunity comes along you can be the right person for the job."

"I have been working at the City of Wanneroo for 2.5 years and have advanced to a pretty high level.
I started working as a Catchment Coordinator on a 4-month contact dealing with a very focused job.
Then I went onto a position as a Conservation Officer, in a permanent position, which looked at managing the entire City’s natural areas. Now I am in a strategic position helping the City to manage the environmental impacts."

Michael - City of Albany
"Hello, my name is Michael.
I am 20 and I work as a Lifeguard/Swimming Instructor for the City of Albany.
I started my career in local government as swimming instructor and progressed through the ranks as the jobs came up.
I enjoy working for local government because the hours are flexible which means I can play my sport and take holidays.
The City of Albany also offers a lot of training and development opportunities. At the moment I am currently doing my Certificate II and III in Community Recreation.
If you have just finished year 12, I would consider giving local government a go. It has a lot of training opportunities, good career paths and a large range of jobs on offer."
