Preferential or Proportional Representation Voting System (PPR)
The Local Government Amendment Act 2007, dealing with a change from the current first past the post voting system to the preferential voting system for single member vacancies and the proportional representation voting system for multi-member vacancies in local government elections, came into operation for the ordinary elections on 20 October, 2007.
The Department has published information and resource materials which are available on the website under Local Government/Elections or in the Publications area under their individual titles.
A software system, CountWA (Local Government), developed jointly by the Department and the Western Australian Electoral Commission (WAEC), is available free of charge to local governments to simplify the vote counting process. Please contact the Manager, Local Government Elections, WAEC, for the latest version of this software.
