Possible Change To Voting Methods For The October 2009 Local Government Elections
Since the time of the last local government ordinary elections, which were held in October 2007, the voting methods that have applied are preferential voting for single member elections, and proportional representation voting for multi member elections.
It is policy of the State Government that local government elections in the future be conducted using the first past the post method of voting.
The State Government’s Bill to progress the necessary changes for the first past the post method, to be in place for the 2009 local government elections, passed through the Legislative Assembly on 6 May 2009. The Bill will now progress to the Legislative Council for consideration and debate.
This web page will be updated in the coming months in regard to the possible change in voting methods.
