Local Government Financial Sustainability Frameworks
In March 2007, the State and Territory Ministers for Local Government endorsed a series of nationally consistent frameworks for local government financial sustainability measures. Local governments in all jurisdictions were consulted in the development of the frameworks.

Three Frameworks have been developed:
  • assessing local government financial sustainability;

  • asset planning and management; and

  • financial planning and reporting

These frameworks aim to provide a consistent reporting mechanism for all local government and a clearer picture for State and Territory governments of the financial and management “health” of local governments.

The three frameworks complement the work being undertaken in Western Australia by the State government and local government sectors on improving financial sustainability of local governments. For instance, the principles of the framework are reflected in the guideline recently released on local government financial ratios.
