Advisory Committee on Women in Local Government
The Advisory Committee on Women in Local Government provides advice to the Minister for Local Government on ways of encouraging and assisting women to seek employment and progress their careers in the Western Australian local government sector.
To achieve this, the Advisory Committee:
- provides a forum to identify and consider matters relating to the employment of women in the sector;
- periodically reviews the situation with respect to the employment of women in local government;
- develops and implements strategies to support and encourage women’s employment and career development in local government; and
- works in partnership with local governments, organisations, the private sector and individuals to provide employment and career development opportunities for women within, or with an interest in joining, the Western Australian local government sector.
The Advisory Committee is working to a number of strategies and actions for 2004-2008. Priorities for 2008 are the provision of education, training and development opportunities, continuation of the mentoring program, promotion of career management approaches for women seeking higher level positions in the sector and enhancement of recruitment for the sector as a whole.
The Advisory Committee is chaired by Mayor Paddi Creevey of the City of Mandurah and members are Chief Executive Officers and seniors managers from local government, State Government and the University sector. The Advisory Committee is supported by a number of ambassadors from those sectors and meets quarterly.
