News of the success and impact commUnity, is having on primary school children is now recognised Australia-wide with orders coming in from NSW, Tasmania, NT and as far as New Zealand.

An initiative of the Department of Local Government and Regional Development, the game is intended to raise the awareness of community values and the role and importance of local government to younger audiences.

The main aims of the game are to build links between students and their community, educate young people about what they could do to contribute to the community and encourage positive community behaviour.

As the students play the game they learn about all the things that can be done in local streets, shops, parks and other public places to make sure that where we live is a safe, clean, green and friendly place.

Players move around the board collecting points for the good deeds they do in the community and when they have collected so many tokens they become a Councillor.  As a Councillor, they move around the board spending tokens on different community projects.  Then the race is well and truly on to land on the Council chambers and become Mayor!

Endorsed by the Curriculum Council, the game has been welcomed by primary school teachers as a useful resource for the Civics and Citizenship program.

Local governments are encouraged to supply games to local schools and libraries to assist in the promotion of the sector to the community.

Copies of the game are available for $70 at cost price (incl GST and postage). More information on the game and how to order copies is available on the  CommUnity Board Game PosterPDF 245.32Kb , or by using our CommUnity Board Game Order FormPDF 504.57Kb , alternatively you may contact the Department on 9217 1500.
